Days 5–6 of Sailing the Sporades
Alonnisos
The quietest of the Sporades, at the heart of a protected marine park.
What to know
Alonnisos is the least developed of the inhabited Sporades: a long, hilly island with a small port at Patitiri, the old hilltop village of Chora, and beaches reached mostly by boat or on foot.
It sits inside the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades, set up in 1992 to protect the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the rarest seals in the world. Dolphins are often seen in its waters.
On our trip
After a morning swim at Stafylos on Skopelos, day five crosses to Alonnisos and into the marine park.
Day six follows the coast to Peristera, the islet opposite Alonnisos known for its ancient shipwreck, for snorkelling. The night is spent in Planitis, a sheltered bay in the north of the island, far enough from any lights to see the Milky Way.
